We are working hard to create a better NL. But, we need your help. This NL cannot be complete without your support. We still need a PREVIEWER who will receive all the previews that the public gives out. You could even have your game included with the release of the NL. This special edition of NL includes the NL Volume 1 pack-in with the first four issues of NL. Now here's HOTWIRED presented by Kevin Vance, president SmartSoft. All You Don't Need To Know About Everything By Kevin Vance President of SmartSoft kevvance@aol.com or just plain Kev Vance on AOL IMMENSELY STUPID GAME DEPT. Some games you get out there on the ZZT/Adventure library are enough to make anybody puke. You know what I'm talking about: those yellow-bordered, no-object, bad-ansi, two-board piles o' JUNK!!! Most people would say "Don't waste your download time on them." I say, "What download time?" Currently, the chances of getting abducted by pink aliens that are all named Bob are greater than picking up a truely decent ZZT Game on AOL. When (and or IF) the ZZT/MZX Forum comes out, I hope you people make a seperate directory for GOOD Games. Which brings us into the next topic. CATCHING Z's DEPT. I wonder if anybody remembers the ZZT/MZX forum. A place which now can only be found in dreams...The wonderful forum where you can go for GAMES, TIPS, ETC. It was supposed to be done LAST MONTH for crying out loud! It's the fifth longest delay I've ever seen (see below) Longest delays 1. WINDOWS '95 2. DOOM 3. RISE OF THE TRIAD 4. THIS NEWSLETTER 5. THE ZZT/MZX FORUM Games to look out for: STAR WARS A NEW HOPE It's okay until you get to Han Solo's Falcon. Then all you get is a cheap-o ending and a complaint about how hard it was to make the game. CALVIN AND HOBBES (GORK) Yellow boarders โ Low-to-no objects โ Bad grafix โ 5 boards โ Need I say more? SUPER ADVENTURE It's a nice idea, but you can't beat it without cheating. It's all yellow bordered. The menu looks nice...except for the fact that you can go to ANY level!!! Games to get: THE MAGIC JOURNEY This game is great! It's long, but not boring. You can beat it without cheat codes. The author uses a lot of #CHAR commands, so everything looks good. The only problem I have with it is the excessive use of dark rooms*. MISSION CLEAN ROOM Okay, I admit it. I wrote the game. It only took a few days, but It's the only game in it's type. It is HUGE! There are no yellow borders. The ending is just through a locked door in the begining, but there are check- points that you must pass before you see the ending. * Well, not really excessive, but I don't like dark rooms. COMING SOON TO YOUR COMPUTER: MetaMan: Join MetaMan in his quest to stop Dr. Willey (the science nerd) from taking over the world. Fight bosses such as Meat Man and Freddie O'Bannon (name changed on purpose) to get weapons such as the Sausage Shooter and the O'Bannon Cannon. Batman Foreclosure: You take the role of Batman as he and his sidekick, Feathers, take on Flat-Face and The Rigmarole. You must stop them and their evil plot to kill Carl the Midget. HERO TIP #478: Remember, Batman, to keep your secret identity as Bruce Springsteen safe. NL KSDOS Longest Delays 1. Nintendo's Ultra 64 (April 96) 2. Link's Chaotic Adventure (MZX) by KongoSoft* 3. Any Decent ZZT/MZX Games *This game of mine was scheduled for release by March/April. Musta Delayed it about a thousand times.* Anyway here's Chris Kohler with the reviews: Chris Kohler's Stupid ZZT/MZX reviews "Now fried with Vegetable Oil" The Good, The Bad, and The Yellow Bordered:: ZZT REVIEWS DA RATINGS!: Excellent\Cool\Okay\Bad\Garbage\Evan Darrow Mission: Renaissance AVAILABILITY: In PC Games area Rating: Cool Mission Renaissance is a game that we'd all like to be able to do: a project for school. Since I had just studied the Renaissance last year, I knew all of this stuff so I am a pretty good judge of how educational this game is. Surprisingly, it is even fun. MR sports excellent graphics and sound, and it is fun to play. I would recommend getting this as it is even an okay learning tool. NoPoint AVAILABILITY: In PC Games area Rating: Cool This game, while having NoPoint, is actually fun in a sick sort of way. It's kind of like IOJ with no actual game cleverly hidden inside. Enjoy the Garden of Nolej. "I don't care about COINS! Where the fuck are the TORCHES?" MZX Game Reviews Jungle Mack AVAILABILITY: Send Email to : MegaKev Rating: Bad Well, Jungle Mack is the first side scroller for MZX. Hopefully, later games will drastically improve over JM because, frankly, it's not fun at all. The graphics and sounds are top-notch, and the game is huge. However, the INCREDIBLY POOR control mechanics really make this one another Trash Can inductee. Joe And The Wandering Targets AVAILABILITY: Send Email to : KRohleder2 Rating: Okay One word: funny. This game is kind of like NoPoint but it is a bit more involved and there is actual action to follow. You play as Joe the Stick figure man and must suffer through rounds of Barney shooting, fun on the Starship ExtraFries, a huge fight with The ZZT Man in the Yellow Bordered Room, and endure looking at a caged-up Super ZZT guy (wierd). You watch an Energizer commercial and then blow up some inert bunnies. All in all, it's fun. Tron AVAILABILITY: Send Email to : TChong Rating: Excellent Have you ever played a ZZT or MZX game that is a "conversion" of a popular video game or computer title? Well, if you have you know that they usually suck, or, are very scaled-down. This is not the case with Tron. Tron MZX, besides offering a spectacular-looking and playing version of that old arcade classic, Tron, improves upon it greatly by adding 2 new modes and different game-enhancing options. You can play 2-player TRON with a friend, or you can play MegaTron with 3 computer opponents after you. You can juice up the game with Ammo, Health, or Bomb modes, or you can just play a game of Classic Tron. Any way you slice it, Tron is a must-have. "It's 1% done! It's 1% done!!!!!!" MZX PREVIEWS: PacMan FOR A FREE PREVIEW: Send Email to : TChong Continuing in the tradition of Tron, HipWare keeps on moving with PacMan. For you lovers of the arcade game, PacMan aims to please. It's just as accurate as Tron. Get your hands on an early version and see for yourself! Visual Death FOR A FREE PREVIEW: Send Email to : ABLO DI The first hand-to-hand combat game for MZX, Visual Death borrows from many famous fighting games. I must say, VD is the best fighter I've ever seen on MZX or ZZT. Check it out for yourself. NL KSDOS: And now....time for: Mission:Enigma - The Unofficial Walkthrough The Castle Exterior: As you begin, stand in the space north of the rose bush until the man runs up and enters the castle. Follow him in. The Castle Interior: First Floor: Find the bookshelf that reads "Dos 9.1h Manual" and Read it. The bookshelf will move. Enter the lower left room. A knife will whiz by, grab it from the north or from the south. Touch the wine bottle and break it, take a shard. Enter the lower right room and touch the guard. Take the key and vest and touch the door and insert the key. Go into the basement. Ignore the bucket and oil drum and go west then north. A guard will jump out. Touch him and take the ruby ring and lantern. Pull the bar on the wall to your right. Now push the bucket under the oil drum and shoot the drum. Pick up the bucket full of oil. Exit the room the way you came out. Go back outside. Castle Ext. Grab the clay from the moat and enter the other door. Grab the gloves and leave the way you got in. Enter the castle. Castle Int. Go back in the basement. Go to where the bar is and go west. Push the 2nd bucket under the section of water pipe that is jutting out (in the middle horizontal section). Go to the water switch ( โฌ ) and turn it off. Now go to the pipe jutting out and shoot it to puncture it. Turn the water on and immediately off or you get flooded out. Plug the hole in the pipe with the clay and turn the water back on. Turn the air conditioning (green box) to maximum. Go back to the first floor. Go into the upper left room from the middle left room. Uncork the bottle of wine. Go back to the basement and shut the air- conditioning off. Go to the vent that is right above the wedge (brown , ) and cork it. Turn the aircon back on until that vent explodes. Go up to the white diamond and touch it and replace it with the ruby ring. Push the mirror up to the upper right corner of the room. Touch the laser firing mechanism in the UL corner of the room and fire the laser. The wedge will set on fire, douse it with water. Enter the room with the yellow boulder through the laser room. Push the boulder into the vent so it explodes. Push the boulder out of the room and touch the spring wall to move the boulder. Through creative pushing you will be able to get the boulder into the middle left room to the upper left room to the room with the throne and 2 blue fakes. Place the boulder on the right blue fake to open the throne and go in. The Electro Maze When you enter this floor, the white and black wizards whom you met on the title screen appear to you and you hear a tale of their past with the evil Dr. Kris. Maleen, a white wizard, who knows CURE, uses it on you, and uses EXIT. Karen, a black wizard, opens the gate to the Electro Maze. Here you must use 10 buttons to turn on and off the electrical barriers blocking your way. For easy reference, I have labeled the buttons as so: 9 10 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 Press buttons 4, 3, 9, 10, 2, 5, 6, 8 to open all the barriers. Karen will cast FIRE in the ice blocking your way and you will move on to... Comm-Thought Exterior The gigantic computer Comm Thought lies ahead, broken. Might you be able to fix it? After trying to turn it on, touch the gate leading into it and Maleen will cast SHRINK. Inside the computer, clear the rubble using your gloves (if you don't have them yet, go back and get them - see the first guide for more info). Go over to the control panel (reversed circle) and open it. Take the small silver key and retrace your steps back to the Electro Maze. Open the silver door on the right side and slip through the series of passages that follow, down to the basement. Light a torch and read the manual. The meaning of FEED GAC will become apparent when you study the red buttons inside CommThought. After going back to Comm Thought Interior and punching in the right combination of buttons (the button letters are in their object names), the force field will vanish. Touch the space between the cut wires and fix it with the water coming out of the nearby pipe. CommThought will be re-activated, so return to the exterior. CommThought will invite you to a game of GEMini, but first enter the blue passage to the right and take the unit of ammo. Return and enter the green passage. Study the rules and memorize them (they are fairly simple). Unfortunately, the programming on this game is totally random so there is no way of telling you what to do. With practice you will quickly become a GEMini master. Winning the game, exit the green door and hurry as fast as you can to the door blocked by the boulder, over on the left. While you are running, you will engage in conversation with CommThought (you can read this since it pauses the game) and Maleen will cast LIT on the machine. You will almost be flooded out, but if you touch the boulder fast enough, Maleen's LEVITATE will work and you will escape. Flood Run as fast as you can to avoid being flooded out, and get through the door. After you escape, Karen will cast AVALANCHE to stop the flood, but you will be trapped battling with Dr. Kris. He uses hypnosis to take control over Karen and Maleen, and summons a gigantic Demon. You have the option of fighting all four of them, but you must eliminate Dr. Kris first, because he can use CURE and has control over Maleen and Karen. After killing Dr. Kris, Karen joins your party again, but Maleen will reveal her true evil side and fight with the Demon. Since Maleen can use CURE, you must kill her first with fight attacks from you only. When Maleen is killed the Demon will attack full force and you must battle it. Use Karen's LIT and FIRE spells liberally, as they do the most damage to the demon. After a brutal battle, the Demon will fall and you will progress to the game's final challenge. Unfortunately for you, I don't want to spoil every single thing in the game as there are some things you should do for yourself. So this will be the final installment of the Mission Enigma guide. I hope that you found this guide helpful, because I know that this game is hard to figure out. The Walkthrough was created and compiled by Chris Kohler. Preview of Vol. 2 Issue 2 of NL: 1.
