Our annual ZZT birthday celebration stream!
Each year the community votes on which of the four original ZZT worlds to play for ZZT's birthday on January 15th. This year, the people wanted to visit the city, meet its populace, and then get the heck out of there. (My voice is a bit shot for this one, apologies)
City is the last of the four worlds, and it shows. No longer do you hunt purple keys, but train tickets, ID cards, and even torches which are almost impossible to find. The game is filled with far more objects, covering a range of citizens ranging from a friendly pawn shop broker and the infamous Dr. Bob, to the corrupt mayor you'll have to bribe with a sizable re-election contribution if you wish to escape.
Your trip through the city takes you to the mugger filled streets of downtown, a park filled with lions, and a lovely fountain currently besieged by a spinning gun. Action is favored significantly over puzzles, making the game much easier to get through quickly as soft-locks are harder to come by. The game features the return of the ZZT bandit, Tim Sweeney's confession that his Spanish is not very good, and ZZT's first ever toilet found in the executive washroom in city hall!
It's a fun game. One that continues to entertain 34 years later. Opinions on which of the original saga's worlds are the best are divisive, but I've always held a soft spot for it. While I don't know which I'd say is the one I like best, I think City remains the one that I have played the most.
