When the bank guard lets you through to the safe, he automatically moves aside, and then automatically moves back in place. If you don't enter the pathway to the safe before he moves back, you will be unable to reach the safe without ?ZAP, because the game assumes you've entered the pathway rather than checking if this is actually the case, and thus the guard will never move out of the way again
