Trying to figure out what DarkMage brings to the table in these DarkMage/Nivek collabs.
Captain Nick is a collection of four games, of which we got through the first two on stream. They're comedy games about traveling from point A to point B in space, searching for macguffins, and singing along to Smashing Pumpkins lyrics. So, they're very much of their time.
The comedy doesn't really land to a modern/older audience, and little happens that isn't a conversation where players are supposed to be laughing, leading to a pretty tedious adventure that constantly drags out achieving your goal. It's not _entirely_ devoid of laughs, but they're rare enough that this is a tough one to get much personal entertainment from thesedays.
The second game does improve things a bit with some nicer art boards, and a somewhat more interesting story just because the game has the characters interact with members of DarkMage Software, giving it some historical appeal. The large rooms to cross with little to interact with don't do any favors though.
Glancing at the other two games in the series, it does look like the style continues, with more and nicer looking art boards, so if the story or humor get more engaging, they might not be so bad. I'm not exactly in a hurry to find out though.
