After last weeks tour of the bosses in Doomsday Arena, I wanted to check out the games the fights came from in the first place, mostly to see what context if any they would have.
The answer is not much, but that's okay because these are still some fun adventures.
The first game is the better of the two, taking players through dangerous caves, forests, and a town where everybody hates you. It's still the work of an inexperienced creator though with it's share of invisible mazes and a pretty massive forest maze spanning several boards that thankfully hits the player over the head with the solution for how to navigate it. Otherwise though it's pretty fun. The cast is silly and the scenery changes quickly enough to keep one's interest even if the story isn't much of anything. There's even an exploit where you can keep getting kissed for health!
The second game takes a more Super ZZT design, starting players in a hub with locked doors each containing a level to get through. The first of these seems decent enough and left me expecting good things in later levels, but there's a catch: significant portions of the sequel are lifted wholesale from the original game. You might have been able to get away with this back in the day where the time between releases meant players would maybe have a sense of deja vu, but going from the first game to the second back to back killed the mood.
The stream started going a little long so we called it a day with more of the game to be completed next time, with hopefully some more original content towards its finale.
