Visiting a sequel quite a time after visiting the original.
Infestation 2 is another centipede focused action game from coolzx where you play as a heroic tough special forces agent whose job is to shoot to pieces any mutant 'pedes he comes across. When the boys at HQ accidentally mutate some snakes into giant monstrosities that take over the building, it's up to you to clean up the mess, find where the queen has made her nest, and prevent a larger outbreak.
The game can't really decide if it's snakes or centipedes, but it doesn't really matter. It's more shooting everything that moves with each board representing a new level. Ammo can be tight, but it works in the game's favor, encouraging precision over rushing into the horde, guns blazing. The level variety leaves a bit to be desired. The special forces building is pretty devoid of everything but walls and desks/tables which act like more walls. It's fun for a bit, but begins to drag on. Eventually you explore some underground caverns that at least break away from being pure right angles, a small change that doesn't actually impact the game all that much.
There's a glimmer of hope though. After your first night you decide to take a break and scour the town for information. This changes up the gameplay quite a bit, having you track down a person who may know what's going on a bit better, and even having to solve a weird puzzle to read the world's worst map. That is, after you convince a man to let you see it via a dead simple dialog puzzle. Which choice will get you what you want? "I'd offer some greenbacks if you help me," or "Your breath stinks as much as your attitude"?
Then it's right back into the same old same old. A few fun surprises in the form of a really grotesque looking alien as well as an infested child who can't be saved from the mutation process. Basically, when coolzx is doing art, it's worth looking at.
The game also has its share of boss battles with giant snakes which look like a more grotesque take on Otto Germain's ZZT bosses. The first of which is so excessive with stars that I'm not sure it's even possible without cheating? The rest are much more easily dispatched, giving the game a busted difficulty curve.
It also includes some vintage MS Paint art!
It's a fun game, though a bit longer than can hold players' interest. A few more surprises or diversions from shooting could make this one more than a straightforward action game, but what you get is perfectly solid if a little repetitive.
