                              Sorve: First Blood

Ummm.... Comthought here. I've come to tell you people about my game! It's,
of course, called Sorve: First Blood. I know that I put something about it a
couple NLs ago, but that time it was a ZZT game. Now, it's an MZX game. Plus,
it's like.... really hard to do an RPG with 9 flags. Sorve: First Blood will
be an RPG, with MANY different characters, and more than one RPG fight just at
the end. The characters are completely original. Yep. *I* thought them up.
Well, I used an already used name for one of them, but I didn't copy what they
looked like. Here's some of the characters: Sorve, Kallage, the White Bishop,
Copper, Brown Paw, Bonecrusher, Sacar, Executa, Jason, Nightstrike, Centaurus,
King Ruffian, Queen Ruffian, Peggy, Mitoarus, and Jarrett Partua. Keep in mind
that there are MANY others.

In Sorve: First Blood, you play Kallage. Kallage was a follower of the White
Bishops, who are like.... these really good guys. The only White Bishop alive
at the moment, who's name is the White Bishop, hears that this real evil guy
named Sorve escapes from his imprisonment. The White Bishop finds Kallage and
gets him to help. It eventually progresses until you get to Evros, where
Sorve's fortress is located.

Let's see.... what else do I need to say....? Ah, yes. That's it. Sorve: First
Blood is full of battles, passion, monsters, and more! Sounds great, don't it?
Any questions? Suggestions? Flames? E-Mail me at dbwilli@scsn.net!

Set Release Date: None yet.
Percentage done: Around % (I'm still making the .doc file! I haven't even
started programming!)

Zmenu! This program will catalog, title, and compress your ZZT games. It
will automatically match the ZZT games to the saved games and compress
everything. Select a game title(you can customize them, but a large number
of game names are included) and it will auto-unzip the saved games and
world, and then load ZZT. When you get a game, just copy it to your ZZT
directory and zmenu will do the rest. Easy to install! Will be coming out in
a month, mabye less, maybe more. Being made by jmstuckman@weirdness.com(me!)

NL Column About Nothing in Particular IV
by Kevin Rohleder
email: zeta@valunet.com

Welcome to another odd column by me. Today is Easter, but that has nothing
to do with this column. This month's column is about programming in general.

MZX and ZZT's programming languages are relatively simple because they are
based on a single objective (i.e. creating a game) whereas a normal
language such as C is not (i.e. you can make lots of things from C).
Robotic and ZZT-OOP are also created for a specific system (i.e. MZX and ZZT)
so their commands only have to deal with the objects in that system, whereas
a normal language such as C must deal with many more commands that may or may
not relate to what you are programming.

Ok. That's out of the way. Now, another topic: The NLML is still in sorry
shape. We need more people! Does anyone have any ideas on how to do that
without getting gobs of newbies signing up? Although at least newbies would
add some variety to the NL (other then the two most seen messages now: "Send
in your articles for the NL!" and "Here's the NL (file attached:
NL-314159.TXT)). Until next month....

P.S. I will again stress the point that you should go to www.vie.com and
download Subspace.

Sunrise Software update, by Kevin Rohleder, due to the fact that he is the
only one IN Sunrise, although Sunrise was once part of Hyperware (what?
some of you have never heard of Hyperware? Dang, I'm old! :) ).

I'm working on Perception which I mentioned a bit last month. There is an
original spell system (however, since nothing (that i've seen) uses this
kind of spell system, I'm not sure how it'll work, I'll have to wait for the
beta tester's opinions...). It also has a good story (well, -I- think it's
good) and some (hopefully) new music. I didn't write the music, but I don't
think anyone's used it before.

I'm also writing a web page which should be up soon. I'll tell you the
address once I know what it is.

Also I have a plan for a cool game which is impossible to do without several
global 'bots, so I'm waiting for MZX3 for it...

QUOTE: "This is a demo for Star Wars: The Path to Coruscant. Sorry, no MODs,
because I never put mods with demos (although, you might already have
cooltech.mod and notagn3.mod)

The story: You are Kyle Katarn, officer on a weapons research center. After
imperials find you hidden weapons center, you level the place and head to
Coruscant. Pretty nice blaster.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fortunately:

        1. This is only a demo.
        2. Has a few nice effects.

Unfortunately:

        1. Arg! NO TITLE SCREEN!!!
        2. Looks a bit cruddy!
        3. You have 2 lives, as soon as you die you are taken to a screen
where your ship blows up. After that you get a blank screen.
        4. Need a lot more work to do. Make it more enjoyable to play.

NAME: Darbytown II
AUTHOR: Dave Bishop (DNBishop)
GRADE: B+
LOCATION: AOL
SIZE: 336K (About +1 Meg packaged)

QUOTE: "Your mission is twofold: the venerable statue of Jake Darby, the
founder of the village of Darbytown, has somehow been scattered throughout
the countryside, and you must find the missing parts and put the statue back
together again. To compound your problem, the old dormant volcano on the
island in the Lake has begun to erupt, and you must find a way to put out
the fires and quench the mountain, once and for all!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fortunately:

        1. This game kind of have some of the elements of Caverns of Zeux.
        2. A variety of music.
        3. Some unique special effects. (Like the clock in DarbyTown. The
minutes seem more like seconds but at a store closes at a
particular time which is pretty creative)
        4. Very interesting puzzles and clues. (Rhyming and still making
           sense.

Unfortunately:

        1. Among solving a puzzles at the pawn shop it tells you to get the
key at the casino. Supposedly you get the key when you win at
a slot machine (key, key ,key). I stopped playing when I lost
           all my money.
        2. This game would receive an A if some of the things you had to do
were optional. (ex. The slot machine)

Well, Darbytown II is a game that's worth the download to check out. It may
take a while to get into the story but it has some nifty features in that
game (I forgot to mention the ability to "Pull" certain objects).

The Star Wars demo, however, well, NEEDS HELP!! This game is just
UNORGINIZED! No title screen, confusing levels, ship blows up and leaves
you hangin'. Ugh! Don't download.

This has been the Critic Corner /w E. CyberBRO. Peace out!
