Surviving a journey through a black hole, and making a desperate landing on a planet in hopes of finding fuel, it's Emanon!
This was a random pull that sounded interesting (pitted against OakTown) that took an overwhelming lead in a Discord poll of what to play. We wound up with something quite neat, if flawed.
You play as an everyday telephone sanitizer turned hero when you're volunteered to explore the planet in search of ansellium so you might make it back home. You're dropped in a large world filled with mountains and plateaus and plenty of caves to explore as you try to get your bearings. Upon meeting the king of this land, you're soon pulled into a new quest to deal with an evil entity that has been slowly taking over the minds of all people on the planet. Being from another world, you're immune to the effects and are the last hope that someone can deal with this.
It's a game with just enough alternate paths to feel open-ended as you slowly travel west fighting off bosses and monsters which range from lions to ruffians to object-based rotons, looking for keys and switches to proceed.
The boss battles are uh "Mortal Kombat" inspired, which means a side-view where you can jump and shoot. Engaging in these fights generally means dying as the enemy spams special moves that can only be blocked by shooting them before they attack. You wind up holding down the shoot button for every one of these fights. Afterwards a unique (and not particularly gory) fatality animation plays.
It's a nice "everyday guy becomes hero" adventure, or it would be if the game was ever willing to give you health and ammo in order to survive it. It's far too rare, and while there are some caches that were missed, it's unlikely it would be enough unless maybe you also happen to find a secret treasure room only hinted at in the credits. Expect to be opening the cheat prompt regularly with this one.
