Going on a tropical island adventure to save our girlfriend from a giant ape!
Banana Quest is an iconic game of the era, a comedic adventure that sees the sad bov of a protagonist struggling to find his way from island to island on his rescue mission. Yet at seemingly every port there is none other than the man with the hand held monkey blocking his path and refusing to allow him through unless he can appease the monkey with some bananas.
Tropical islands be darned, getting good bananas (in this economy?) ain't easy, and players must scour each island in search of any leads, whether that be the banana store, banana market, or using a brain-augmenting machine to transmogrify avocados into the correct fruit. It's silly, and runs at a slow pace, requiring patience to figure out what can really be interacted with in order to uncover the next banana.
WiL sprinkles in a few engines throughout, ranging from diving for gems, to avocado-TF, to tree climbing while dodging projectiles. There's a nice custom font that gives the game a personal touch, replacing keys with bananas and such, and adding in some diagonal blocks to create art with smoother angles. All of this is built on top of a modified for the hell of it ZZT which alters the names of ZZT-OOP commands, cheats, and built-in messages because the year is 2000 and hex editing ZZT is cool.
The game is also quite musical! WiL loads the game up with sound, including a number of short tunes as well as the Banana Quest Anthem, which has been stuck in my head for 25 years now.
A fun game when progress is being made! Though it seems to like to drag things out a bit just to torment the ZZT community...
