Wrapping up these previously MIA 24HoZZT games!
Starting with Viovi's weird and short art project which is I guess a reference to those old Talk Boy Commercials ("Hi Kids! We're Home Early!") that's over before you know it.
"Master Computer" shows off some nice art of a computer which gains sentience and takes over the building, transforming it into all sorts of environments with little connection to one anther. Nothing too exciting, though the final battle with the computer in RPG form (of course) has some well-animated invisible wall effects for attacks.
WiL's "Meta" gets philosophical, which the judges were extremely into. The game is hard to figure out, requiring finding hidden objects and noticing details that don't seem relevant to bring up in other conversations that are mandatory to make progress, which makes for a slow going game that's of considerable length. Applying the game's messaging to the gameplay is a challenge, but the overall theme that you have the power to make decisions in your life is a positive one that I'm sure a lot of us needed as teenagers.
Zamros brings us the competition's lone junk entry, a purposely bad creation made to piss off one or more judges. This one is pretty tame compared to other 24HoZZT's so I wanted to stream one that I actually could. Linux linux linux linux linux. 10/10
"After 2025" was a jumpscare of a title. In this game, the year sees us having been conquered by aliens who now use humans for genetic experimentation. You play as a test subject with a tentacle growing from his shoulder who tries to break out of the facility thanks to a new power to absorb DNA of any creature and transform into that species. This one is solidly made, fun to play, and features some nice cartoonish art, plus a very memorable design for the player! Easily one of my favorites.
It loves to swear to a comedic degree, which even the author notes in the credits.
Then it's off to "Tale of Jim", the story of a hero who doesn't want to be a hero. Aliens have invaded and it's up to Jim to- oh. Hang on. That's the end of this very incomplete game.
And for a fun little treat (and to better remember these games in my head) I sat down and made a little tier list of them to quickly (hah) come up with my own personal rankings for the contest. Something that I'm going to do per-episode going forward as this took a while! But it was fun! But also please do not treat gut instinct letter grades as anything other than my on the spot opinions!!
