24 Hours of ZZT Summer 2000 [Metamorphosis]

Overview

The Summer 2000 24 Hours of ZZT contest was held on August 12th, 2000. It was hosted by myth, who had won the previous 24 Hours of ZZT contest and taken on the role of hosting and judging. 27 entries were submitted. For many years, no complete archive of the games submitted was available, with only eight games included in an unofficial release built from entries authors chose to individually release.

Scores

Two sources of scores for the submissions exist. The original scores file as found on the Interactive Fantasies 24HoZZT archive, as well as an incomplete set of scores by an individual judge which can be found in the archive of all submissions. These are assumed to be xf's as the scores and comments do not match any on the original scores file. These partial scores were not used when calculating each game's final ranking.

Entry Descriptions

abyss - Terrorists are attacking the scientific research facility where you perform illicit experiments. Repel the attack and get out with your life!

after 2025 - After aliens have conquered humanity, you are a test subject for DNA experiments which have given you a tentacle growing out of your shoulder and the ability to transform into other creatures once injected with a DNA sample. Break free of your prison, release your fellow prisoners, and begin to fight back against the invaders.

Animal Shock - Blast into space for a routine mission, only for aliens to attack the ship and begin performing experiments on the crew that transform them into animals. Find a way to escape with any survivors before you to are turned into an animal.

Binary - As a prisoner on a spaceship, when the AI orders you to self-destruct to prevent your secret cargo from falling into the wrong hands, escape to freedom and discover that you have the abilities of a god.

blood stream - After being cursed to slowly shrink into nothingness, go on a quest to break the curse, teaming up with the game's narrator who joins you as a party member.

burnout fuckstar - As Princess F*ggt (who is also the author, so take the name as you will), ascend a tower to stop the person responsible for the world beginning to rot. As many bugs as homophobic slurs and stereotypes. Nice art. Very much of its era.

butterfly - Fight the butterfly, whose wings keep causing dangerous weather conditions. Answer trivia about chaos theory, defeat caterpillars in a shooting gallery, play out a Monty Hall problem, and fight a butterfly in an RPG battle.

Cabin in the woods - An incomplete game about escaping from giant insects.

Caterpillar - First you lose your job. Then you drink tea with an old man who traps you in an alternate dimension. Explore dangerous caverns and try to find a means of escape while also looking for your friends/coworkers who are here too.

FIND THE FNORK - An object hunt about an animal capable of turning into objects as a form of camouflage.

Gay Denny's II: Metamorphosis - A single song (split into two objects) and nothing else. A really good tune when put together.

HiiKiWeHomEay - Two trippy boards with abstract references to the old Talk Boy commercial "Hi kids. We're home early!"

Man Evolution - Go from single cell, to cave man, to modern man in a series of engine-powered levels. Many bugs make the game unbeatable without extensive cheating. Sue me, I was 11.

Master Computer - A computer is mutated and transforms the building you're in into a harsh environment. Get through a few dis-connected boards and fight the computer in an RPG battle

Meta - Conquer your self-doubt by helping strange people on strange worlds that are representative of your mental well-being.

Metamorphine - A graffiti artist takes some magic beans and goes on a trip with some impressive art boards and creative ways of displaying text

METAMORPHISEISETOESEISES - A junk entry that mostly just says Linux a lot. Tame by the standards of 24HoZZT entries intended to troll the judges.

mutatopsis - After "accidentally" mutating your sibling into an Ultralisk, you need to gather your friends to de-mutate them. Some twitchy instant death challenges and a little shoot em' up engine for the finale.

Pleasant Thoughts - A madman has released a virus which will kill 90% of the Earth's population. Decide how to spend the rest of your days, whether that be hiding, fighting, or trying to save the infected with a cure that's as bad as the disease. Featuring a protagonist that constantly pushes people away from him by refusing to acknowledge emotions.

Shifters - Fuse together with an alien and use your new combat skills in order to safely reach his crashed spaceship and prevent an explosion capable of destroying the planet.

Social Outcast - Become liked in school by being cool. Keep your grades up, but don't be a teacher's pet. Contains some crude jokes as asides that hurt the experience.

Tale of Jim - An incomplete game about a reluctant hero.

The Change - Seemingly un-killable monsters are approaching your hometown. Go on a quest to find people who may be able to stop them before it's too late.

The metamorphosis of a musical - An essay about the creation of the musical Cats, and some piano engines.

Twisted Fate - You awaken in a new form with no memory of your past self. As you explore a dimension of monsters, you begin to realize who you are and how many people you have gotten killed through your poor leadership.

Untitled - A very Earthbound inspired adventure that has you trying to gain access to the top of the mountain near your home where something from space has just crash landed.

Witch's Curse - Your friends have been transformed into frogs after harassing a witch. Search for them all so they can be turned back into humans.
