Celebrating ZZT's fancier cousin MegaZeux all throughout the month of May!
"Spirit Revenge" is a well-regarded old-school adventure game for MegaZeux. You awaken to find yourself dead! Now stuck in purgatory you need to find a way to escape, learn the truth of your demise, and save your best friend who was falsely accused of your murder.
The game revolves around finding items and where they can be used. It looks nice for a 1997 MZX game, and includes a few fully animated sequences throughout. Plus a chill soundtrack. Your journey sees your escape from purgatory, to escaping a dungeon, and then infiltrating a castle to prove your name before confronting the real villain in their secret underground hideout.
When things are moving along, it's a lot of fun. There's some humor that still retains its charms now (I love the way you get past the last guard once you run out of sleeping-pill infused wine), and a few unexpected surprises. I certainly wasn't expecting what I got when I dug up the ground in the courtyard.
Alas, when things aren't moving, it turns into running around in circles trying to find exactly what yenrab wanted you to combine, which can get a little unintuitive. Need a torch? Try setting a human bone on fire. Not allowed in the chapel with a dagger? Throw it away in one and one one spot! Need to pay someone off? Find coins hidden in random spots throughout the castle! (Somehow I had no trouble with this one actually)
Despite these moments of wandering, it was a fun game overall. The game seems to be missing a spoilers file mentioned in the manual which would have made it easier to get past some of these weaker moments, but if you have a bit of patience (or just use this video as reference) you can enjoy Spirit Revenge's unique story and entertaining interactions with minimal fuss. The game feels a little shaky now that over 25 years have passed, but this game showcases the spirit (pun not intended) of the 90s ZZT/MZX communities in a way where its obvious why folks still remember it today.
