A stream of the recent submissions to the 2.4 Hours Jam Circuit hosted by WiL. And also some magazines because why not?
All of the (non-magazine) worlds were made with a 144 minute time limit.
Starting with Let Not Thee the Earth Consume, RT presents a game about moving as quickly as possible. A giant monster in the underground has been unearthed and is rapidly traveling upward, consuming the entire mining operation and all who remain underground! Race upward and solve a series of a small challenges on each floor of the mines which range from shoving boxes, touching trees, and defeating a room of enemies via energizer. It's frantic and fun! And the protagonist and I share a birthday!
On Guard by dave2 takes the form of a endless defense against an endless horde of invaders out to take your land. The game uniquely mixes turn based and real time combat, having turns alternate until a bullet is on screen. In theory this lets you strategize how you approach enemies, though if they decide to shoot first, it quickly becomes a scramble. Harvest wood from the trees and use it to craft ammo and health refills in your little cabin, until you succumb to the assault or your home is completely destroyed. Challenging!
The Impossible Adventures is more in Snorb's long running La Vie series. This time you play as the ZZT Bandit herself, rescuing yourself from prison instead. There's some real run ins with the time limit here, suggesting gameplay more than offering it, but it's still got the expected humor and Keygan surprise you'd expect from the series. Just don't expect much in the way of action or puzzle solving ...or baccarat.
Jeff The Kill you by WiL also struggles with the time limit, acknowledging extra time being used to finish the game. In this case, WiL brings in a randomized text adventure where players need to explore a strange home while evading Jeff who will The Kill you. Its somewhat reminiscent of the old DOS game Castle Adventure. Input is strictly arrow key based, selecting exits or choosing to grab a small number of items such as keys. Your goal is to find the key to the basement and rescue your friend who will then allow you to deal with Jeff. A cool demonstration of a new style of gameplay for Weave!
Kaddar's Chukka Clan offers two paths, either pro- or anti- Chukka. In a post apocalyptic future where coffee is king, you are the king. Make decisions to settle disputes and juggle a handful of stats and try not to get deposed or assassinated by disgruntled subjects. Alternatively, play as a disgruntled subject and fight your way through a coffee-filled train to take it all for yourself, and maybe do away with the tyrant that calls himself king. Two very different styles of gameplay await depending on your path!
And then to round things out, we return to the DarkMage software magazine. ...Unfortunately it had been so long that we kind of replayed some issues that we had already seen before. (I think they didn't get marked as being in the last stream with them??) The one new issue played covers the usual reviews and previews. It also features "DarkMage and the Fat Vampire" a short game about trying to befriend your new neighbor who claims to be a vampire. But that's silly, right?
