Livestream - City Adventure (and Ultimate Conquest)

It's the weekend. You're a child with $130 and a gun. Return of the Jedi won't be screened until later tonight. What's a kid to do to have fun in the meantime?

A trip to the city!

This is one of those very ZZT-core games, where a young author turns a daydream into a game. In this case, the player is free on the weekend to explore the city and have as much fun as they possibly can. They come equipped with $130 in cash and a gun. Perhaps it's not a fantasy actually.

Regardless, this is a nice little fuck around and find out game with little actual goals other than to meet up with your friend at the movies to go see Return of the Jedi. Along the way though, there are plenty of things to distract you. You can visit an arcade and play a broken Laser Tag game that the author knows is broken and kills you for cheating if you zap out of it. You can shoot Barneys in the clubhouse. You can rescue someone from a construction accident at Nickelodeon studios. Ren and Stimpy aren't there, but they are a possible answer to a trivia question in the casino where the child with a gun and wad of cash are welcome to play the slots and other games.

Lots of time-capsuley moments as we see what bits of pop culture were on AHMorrow's mind as he created this.

There's not much "game" here, but it's charming and fun to explore. You don't actually even use your gun outside of the broken Laser Tag game. The author loves showing off all the ZZT tricks they know, with player-clone teleportation, forest that looks like water, and some tiny engines like a little platform climbing mini-game. It's almost nostalgic in a way.

...It is a bit short though, so just to break the hour mark we then looked as the sneak peek of "Ultimate Conquest", a two board teaser for an unfinished RPG depicting a nice castle interior, and then a cool mountaintop tower at sunset. Looks nice, and looks more what DarkMage Software games usually look like.
