(0:00) “HELLQUEST” by Lachesis (2012) [https://www.digitalmzx.com/show.php?id=1952]
** This video features some strong flashing and glitchy effects when approaching the final boss chamber **
Around (52:45) is the first time we see them.
From (1:26:00) onward, each attempt at the final boss requires going through the hall and getting blasted.
****
Jumping right in thanks to leaving the scene wrong for several minutes before noticing people in chat talking about how they can't see anything!!!
99%ing HELLQUEST with a lot of exploration and realization that the game has a heck of a lot of secrets actually. These include the music notes which are just there for the fun of finding something hidden in each sector. It also includes hidden items that would have been so extremely useful to discover. Like a gosh darn _torch_ for the game's nasty dark boards.
And an item to let you float over pits. Useful given the game's extremely troll-y shortcut that sets you up to walk directly into one after changing boards!
To enter the final chamber, a number of crystals need to be collected, giving players a reason to start hunting for anything they might not have found before. These crystals break away from the action and consist of a series of puzzles ranging from boxing in creatures, to timing shots to alter water currents in your favor.
For the remaining boss battles, we get to fight ourselves, a fight I make no progress on until I finally do. The final boss though, is a ton of fun, with giant hands that sweep across the room requiring well-timed and confident movements to successfully dodge. It's a slow and steady process of improving at handling them until a win can be eked out and the truth of the HELLSYSTEM can be discovered.
The downsides include the nearest checkpoint being several boards away from the boss, so we have to walk this same hallway again and again and again. It also has some glitchy visual effects which are worth putting a photosensitivity warning on.
But overall it was a lot of fun! A challenging game built from a few pieces that's really enjoyable to explore, collecting power ups and weapons while fighting quite a number of bosses! I'll be looking into its sequel next May for sure!
