It's Picross! For ZZT!

Nonograms, Griddlers, whatever.

In a shocking change of pace, WiL releases a new game and I immediately understand how to play it properly, as I am actually competent at these puzzles and enjoy them a lot! Since we're working with Weave, the interface is clean, free of needing to do complex ZZT-OOP to determine if a puzzle is solved or not, and quite responsive. It's just legit a valid way to do some Picross puzzles, and that's a lot of fun!

There's a story that ties itself into the Oasis er, series (where's part 2? Don't look at me.) with Captain Crab and crew turning blocks into memories into scaffolding to perform a rescue mission. It gives you a reason to play these puzzles over the countless alternatives, though the story so far is pretty light.

The real highlight is, as in all good Picross games, getting to see the weird little pictures you make and trying to figure out what they are when the puzzles are half-solved. This one understandably opts for a ZZT theme, and while that does include the obvious shapes of lions, bears, and bombs (oh my) it doesn't take long for more complex concepts to show up. Some are references to ZZT games of ye olden times including works by Tseng and Eurakarte. Others skew more recent, touching on some of WiL's own games or The Green Herring's.

The ZZT community was my introduction to Picross 20-something years ago and it's nice to see this come full circle. If you enjoy these kind of puzzles, you'll definitely enjoy this one as well. It doesn't feel compromised for ZZT in any way. If you somehow haven't played a Picross game yet, WiL includes a tutorial that quickly dives in to logic needed to make deductions, making this a fine place to start.

I admit, there's not a whole lot to say during this one that isn't "one plus two... plus two... plus one", but folks said they were enjoying it and down for another chill stream of the rest of the game, so heck yeah, I get to play Picross!
