A bonus stream of various DOS games available on friend-of-the-Museum Darren Hewer's excellent https://dosgames.com! As usual, my partner Geight joins me for a look at whatever weird, funny, and fun games we happen to spin up on a big wheel that I keep forgetting to adjust the crop of so viewers can see the full titles of games!
Dork's Dream opens with a goofy looking dinosaur that gets scared by thunder and smacked in the head with a falling branch when he shelters under a tree. This turns into a puzzle platformer with some real slidey controls.
The Ant Hill games are a straightforward "grab treasure and reach exit" maze game that uses tiny blocks for its walls to sculpt some neat looking caverns filled with giant ants and snakes! It's kind of fun! The sequel goes deeper underground and introduces demons and weird slime monsters that give the game quite an escalation while playing the same. Other than the rocks that it took us forever to realize we could throw rather than sneaking past randomly moving enemies...
Krypton Egg is a fever dream of a Breakout game with intense audio (too intense) and bright colors. I hate it. Geight loves it.
The Encoraching Gloom is a game jam game with random levels filled with treasure to collect, walls to bomb, and spikes to hopefully avoid. All the while damaging gloom slowly spreads and overtakes the level forcing you to move fast and make quick decisions! It's a text mode game with some ZZT vibes to it.
Rally-Sport is an early 3D 1v1 racing game. It took awhile to figure out how to play, but seemed to be worth the effort!
Build-A-Fish, the game we all wanted to see, is an edutainment title meant to run on a kiosk at an aquarium. Make a few choices and see what fish you can create!
Ario Bros. taught us the importance of the letter "M" as this early 80s ASCII game requires some really perfect timing to actually jump effectively.
The Anarchic Kingdom is a relatively modern DOS strategy game with a 12 turn limit as smaller lords wage war during a transitional period in the monarchy. It seems really cool! Though 10 minutes of a strategy game isn't much time to learn any actual strategy. Nice CGA artwork that will assuredly run on almost anything.
Double Pac-Man stands out from countless Pac-Man clones by allowing 2 players to roam its mazes simultaneously. There are both co-op and competitive modes. The controls are a little finicky, but the novelty gives it a sense of identity among the sea of alternatives.
Orbots is a surreal shoot em up set in the far off year of 2020 a time in which all was "not well" according to the story. Fly a space helicopter around and shoot at all kinds of weird alien creatures. Some inconsistent audio dinged an otherwise fun, if quite strange, game.
The Horde is a dang Toys For Bob game! A sort of early tower defense title where you protect crops from a horde of impish creatures. It wasn't working properly, with some menus not displaying, but being interactable which made actually figuring the game out pretty much impossible. Really nice animations though!
Rock 'n' Spin is a Boulder Dash game with an emu protagonist! Collect the gems and watch out for falling rocks! Features a replay of your inputs when you die allowing you to automatically retrace your steps, and then jump back in at any point. A clever attempt to deal with the repetition of repeated failure.
Lastly, Bat 'n Ball, a Warlords game where you bounce around a ball trying to protect your "castle" while knocking down others'. This one was a childhood favorite and is still just a lot of fun to play. Many surprises were had in the readme.
