“Planet Red (with infinite apologies to Yenrab)” by Dr. Dos (2026) [https://museumofzzt.com/file/view/dos2p4h-planet-red/]
Participating in the 2.4 Hours of Jam Circuit, and making a game based around plagiarizing a board from a classic ZZT world!
I chose Planet Red's opening board, a "bold choice" I've been told, and it's character set. Infinite apologies go to Yenrab who created the original game.
In MY VERSION I explore what might have happened if your ship didn't crash land in the middle of an alien city, instantly killing everyone but you on board and getting you thrown into "The Pit" for the civilians that perished due to crash. What a bummer! What if instead...
you landed on the planet in the middle of nowhere and began searching for alien life? Maybe climb a mountain and see a city in the distance to head towards?
Like all 2.4 hour jams, the development process is fast, with no time to consider whether your current plan is the best one or not. Especially after burning a lot more time than expected modifying the lifted board to not have the crash sequence play out.
Initial plans were a bit grander, find a document lifeforms, get goofy commentary from your crew, maybe help some aliens out to earn their respect. In practice, you climb a mountain, find a device, then climb back down and the game turns into a straightforward action game where you search for key items in a cave and fight a big centipede monster.
It was fun though! I felt like I was just barely scratching the surface of ZZT space games like Turmoil, and was left wanting to develop such a game proper. Don't worry, these feelings of doing things will quickly go away.
This is also the early bird time for the jam, so I got to set the tone here as the first person to participate. Who knows what other games will come of this? I'm sure we'll see on stream in a few weeks!
