Kicking off the new year with a month long celebration of ZZT's 35th anniversary! We'll be playing through all four original ZZT worlds each Sunday in January. So of course, we start from the beginning with Town of ZZT.
An open-ended adventure filled with puzzles, action boards, and mazes to find five purple keys to unlock the palace doors, Town set the tone for what a ZZT world was. And while the purple key adventure eventually fell out of favor, it still remains an excellent starting point to show that, yes, this little text mode game can be quite fun.
We brave the castle labyrinth and vaporize some poor dragons. We mellow out in the House of Blues. We style on the Rube board. The game is a familiar friend at this point, whose halls are etched into so many people's memories. I put a little extra emphasis on trying to get a high score this time, which adds a bit of tension to what would otherwise be playthrough X+1. Though my efforts to complete the game without needing to load a save end up being in vain. Only now am I realizing how conniving the bank vault password truly is...
