โฆ Livestreams of some ZZT game development of a yet unnamed game by Dr. Dos โฆ
This project began on stream after playing Darbytown, and deciding it would be fun to make a ZZT game on stream in a similar style. Prior to streaming, work was done to make a outline of a 3x3 arrangement of boards, a basic goal to achieve (finding statue pieces like in Darbytown), and designing a puzzle in advance so the stream could move quickly.
The first video sees us setting up a starting board where the objective is revealed along with a few basic elements to ease players in to the game. Followed by an action screen with buttons protected by various creatures in order to proceed to the third area, a construction site filled with blink walls, spinning guns, and piles of dirt. Development then jumps ahead to the central board, a park used as a hub for returning to previous boards more quickly, that deliberately lacks any danger.
In the second video, we set up another action sequence, making the player do laps around an area to grab keys in order to open up the next board, as well as a shop that serves as a shortcut back to the start. Torches are a key item to buy for a dark transporter maze that players can enter early, only to have to leave if they have no light source.
Then we get to another looping board, but this time with duplicating monsters that respawn indefinitely and change on each lap. I suppose we're a bit action heavy with this one...
All the while, I'm doing my best to explain what I'm doing in KevEdit to create the boards, and explaining how object code works! The next stream of gamedev should hopefully get us to the finish line, and will also be a break from action sequences with some puzzles coming into play instead!
