A field trip to the world famous Monster Zoo!
After an indecisive 3-way tie for which official Super ZZT world to stream this year, I went with Monster Zoo. As always, the game is a colorful treat that really showcases what Super ZZT offers over the original. Alan Pilgrim creates vibrant and sprawling environments that take advantage of ZZT's bestial adversaries, and isn't afraid of tossing players into their cages to fight their way through this rather weird place.
We get to answer trivia about the Honeymooners and C.S. Lewis, Avoid shooting as many dragons as possible, and somehow find a hidden bonus area that I don't think I've ever stumbled across before. We even discuss the meaning of leftover ammo from World War 2.
We also talk a little about some of the strange choices Super ZZT makes, mostly due to the then tiny team of two at Epic wanting to focus on more detailed games along with issues getting the program to even compile leading to awkward cuts that add a number of trade-offs and missing obvious features (refering to the new colors in ZZT-OOP anyone?) that stymied its success as a game creation system of the 90s.
